Greek life in general and at Bucknell especially is a predominantly white organization that actively promotes heteronormativity. Through mixing with only organizations of the opposite gender and assuming a date for a party has to be the opposite gender, Greek organizations don’t have space to make those that identify differently feel welcomed. Since fraternities were created as a way for the white upper class to distinguish themselves, Greek organizations' reputation doesn’t encourage diversity. How do we change this?
Talk about it
Where does your organization currently stand in diversity?
Does your organization use inclusive language?
Does your organization have a diversity and inclusion statement?
Do you introduce yourselves using pronouns?
Get inclusivity training
Start a conversation with the DEI offices
Bring in a speaker to start the conversation and provide resources
Talk to your nationals about offering more scholarships to make Greek life accessible for everyone
Change the “dress code”
When it comes to events where you want members to look unified take into account individuality
Allow members to feel comfortable and express themselves
